in which the Rambler rejoices...

This is NOT actually the new aumbry at Most Holy & Undivided, but I wanted to post a picture of some sort.

The man who fixes stuff around and about, after some considerable persuading, launched the actual project last week by cutting a hole in the panelling near the credence table.

He has built a lovely box which just perfectly accommodates the big ciborium with its lid, and the big cruet for the consecrated wine. The box will have a door made of the cut-out piece of panelling, and a modest but authoritative ornamental cross. Also a lock.

And now we consider the purchase and installation of a suitably pompous-glorious Sanctuary Lamp.

Ah, you Anglicans sure like your stuff...not to mention your excellent vocabularies! It's great to have craftsmen and -women in one's congregation.

We do indeed, Auntie, and the challenge is to keep it just on the sweet side of idolatry...we don't always succeed, I admit!

my current parish reserves so much bread and wine, to accomodate our lay visitors (it is a retirement community with three big nursing homes that we visit)- any way so much that we store it in a closet...with a steel door (because the silver is also in that closet) and the perpetual flame...a flickering light bulb...its sad really. But not something I'm going to tackle...

we do have a tabernacle in the chapel, a nice wood one with a real burning candle...but mostly it houses the chrism...

I like your idea.

When the rev and I first got to his current posts, one of his parishes had a sanctuary candle but no aumbry. The options were either the sanctuary lamp goes or we get an aumbry. Luckily for us one of the parishioners was able to build one and mount it to the stone wall. The parishioner calls it a little bird house. So much for fancy vocabularies.

Lovely, I LOVE the "birdhouse." When I introduced the term "aumbry," my folks said, "Is that like in the westerns, 'oh, he is One Bad Aumbry'?"
some days I would despair, if it weren't forbidden...

Oh, goodie! You needs that.

One Bad Aumbry, LOL!!!!!!!

You know how happy my proper sanctuary light made me :-) - so this is fab.
Hugger Steward, who despite reading theology at Cambridge has a deep & healthy suspicion of all things churchy, claims I have blighted his life forever by introducing him to such words as aumbrey...so much so that his younger bro has been known to taunt him b sending a text that says
"aumbrey, aumbrey, AUMBREY!"

So THAT's how you spell it!

Now, I'm rejoicing as well, but I'm not sure that thing you need is a Sanctuary lamp. I think what you're looking for is a Presence Lamp. The Sanctuary Lamps, I suspect, are the seven lights in a row roughly above the communion rail.

But, WOO HOO! either way.
