amid toil and grief and pain

...trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, and any other adversity...

from time to time I think of a couple of Young Lady Theology Students of my acquaintance...

and my heart really does leap up, and I think there may be hope for the church after all.

Indeed. And then I speak to people who are coming back to church for a parent or grandparent funeral - people who never go to church and find their spirituality elsewhere (where I know not)...sigh...I fear when my kids grow up no one will be in church because it will have become meaningless (to them)...

still there are glimmers of hope now and then....

dear mompriest, the girls I'm thinking of are both PKs, both stellar-bright and slap-yourself-in-the-head beautiful and full of talent and GRACE in every sense of the word...and revelling in their studies and their ministry...

I can think of a couple myself in this end of the swamp. There's something about a young woman who has just finished her Ph.D. and is going straight into theology and can already preach better than most of the clergy in the diocese. hard *not* to be hopeful.
